About The Workshop
Ongoing clinical practice often contributes to a kind of ethical “drift”.
In addition, the internet, social media, and other technological changes have offered new ethical challenges for mental health clinicians.
Using case examples, discussion, and lecture, participants in this workshop will consider how the ethical codes apply to the practical world of counseling and special emphasis will be placed on developing professionals’ understanding of decision-making processes used in arriving at ethical courses of action in the context of a changing world.
The workshop will highlight issues of informed consent, competence, confidentiality, and boundaries/multiple relationships.
Using case studies and vignettes, professionals will be invited to consider what might be the best course of action in a variety of scenarios presenting ethical dilemmas.

Learning Objectives
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the assumptions and theories behind ethical decision making models
- Identify and explain a practical model for ethical decision-making
- Explain how ethical decision-making models can apply to issues of informed consent
- Explain how ethical decision-making models can apply to issues of competence
- Explain how ethical decision-making models can apply to issues of confidentiality
- Explain how ethical decision-making models can apply to issues of dual relationships
About The Presenter
Dr. Jeff Ashby is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State University.
He is the Director of Georgia State’s Counseling Psychology doctoral program, a licensed psychologist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and a Registered Play Therapist – Supervisor.
Dr. Ashby has taught ethics at the graduate level for over 20 years and has served as Chair of the Ethics Committee of the International Association of Play Therapy and as an ethics content expert with the State of Georgia Psychology board.
He has made over 100 presentations at professional conferences and authored/co-authored more than 80 articles in refereed journals, numerous book chapters, and two books.

Parking
Visitors can use parking spaces by the Family Guidance Center (FGC) – Building D. Watch for the AAPT signs to guide you to parking and the entrance into the workshop.

Cancellation Policy & Refunds
Registrants canceling up to 48 hours before a workshop will receive a tuition refund less a $20 administrative fee, or if requested, a voucher good for one year for a future workshop.
All requests must be made in writing or by email. No refunds issued for any reason after date of workshop.
In the unlikely event the workshop cannot be held, registrants will receive complimentary admission to a rescheduled workshop or a full value voucher, good for one year, for a future workshop.
Continuing Education
Six (6) Contact Hours will be provided for a full day of attendance. No certificate of attendance will be given before the workshop is completed. No partial credit will be awarded.
NOTE: This workshop is for NBCC, not APT CE credit.
Counselors
Alabama Association for Play Therapy (AAPT) has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6211. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Alabama Association for Play Therapy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
Play Therapists
AAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy (APT) to offer continuing education specific to Play Therapy. APT Approved Provider No. 98-045.
Because this workshop topic is about ethics and not Play Therapy specific, AAPT can only offer NBCC CE credit. We apologize for the confusion.
Marriage and Family Therapists
The Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy (ABEMFT) automatically approves courses that are NBCC approved for CEU credit.
Social Workers
The Alabama Association for Play Therapy (AAPT) is recognized by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners (ABSWE) to offer continuing education for social workers. ASBSWE Provider No. 0284.
