About The Workshop

Ongoing clinical practice often contributes to a kind of ethical “drift”.

In addition, the internet, social media, and other technological changes have offered new ethical challenges for mental health clinicians.

Using case examples, discussion, and lecture, participants in this workshop will consider how the ethical codes apply to the practical world of counseling and special emphasis will be placed on developing professionals’ understanding of decision-making processes used in arriving at ethical courses of action in the context of a changing world.

The workshop will highlight issues of informed consent, competence, confidentiality, and boundaries/multiple relationships.

Using case studies and vignettes, professionals will be invited to consider what might be the best course of action in a variety of scenarios presenting ethical dilemmas.

About The Presenter

Dr. Jeff Ashby is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State University.

He is the Director of Georgia State’s Counseling Psychology doctoral program, a licensed psychologist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and a Registered Play Therapist – Supervisor.

Dr. Ashby has taught ethics at the graduate level for over 20 years and has served as Chair of the Ethics Committee of the International Association of Play Therapy and as an ethics content expert with the State of Georgia Psychology board.

He has made over 100 presentations at professional conferences and authored/co-authored more than 80 articles in refereed journals, numerous book chapters, and two books.

About The Workshop

Grieving children and children of divorce, both in private practice and in the school setting, present some unique challenges to the therapist. Play therapy and group therapy provide appropriate models for these children.

Identifying symptoms of grief and developing appropriate interventions for these children is the focus of this presentation. Case examples of both school-based groups and individual interventions will be presented. Issues of working with caretakers will also be discussed.

Play therapy is an appropriate intervention for grieving children and children of divorce. Often the child is seen as not grieving and the parent or caretaker is often unable to relate to the needs of the child as he or she is dealing with his or her own grief and loss issues. With the child of divorce there may also be issues of guilt. In both cases there are primary and secondary losses.

Within the school, this child may have difficulty completing or focusing on tasks and may be disruptive or may move from a disruptive child to a quiet child. Either may signify psychological distress, thus the play therapist can provide a safe place for the child to express grief and process grief, divorce and change.

The attitude of acceptance of the child without evaluation is a significant part of this process. This is true for traumatic grief as well. Given the basic assumption that play is the child’s language, the toys become the vehicle for exploring the loss and processing the impact of the loss on the life of the child.

Through the group process, children can share and process grief. They may also find that they are not the only ones with this experience which may reduce concerns about their own reactions. Both group play therapy and expressive therapy techniques are useful with this population.

About The Presenter

Hilda R. Glazer has an Ed.D from Rutgers University in Educational Psychology and has an MS in Counseling from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.

After holding a tenured position at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Hilda moved to Ohio.

She has held a number of academic positions including Dean of the School of Psychology at Walden University and chair of Educational Psychology at Capella University and is currently the Director of the Capella Center for the Study of Play Therapy.

She has a specialty in counseling grieving children and works with Mount Carmel Hospice in Columbus, OH and in her private practice on a part time basis. She is widely published and has presented in The United States and Europe on her work with children and her research in distance education.

Her most recent publications include a chapter on grieving children and one in press on using technology in play therapy.

About The Presenter

Trudy Post Sprunk has a Master’s Degree in Education as well as a Post-Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Trudy is an LMFT, LPC, RPT and CPT and Supervisor in each of those areas. She has been a Psychotherapist since 1971 and has been in private practice in Tucker, GA since 1985.

Trudy has presented over 700 lectures at Local, National, and International Conferences. She has also done Radio and TV interviews on topics relating to Play Therapy and Parenting.

She has written articles that have appeared in Learning Times, GACLD Newsletter, ACLD Newsbriefs, APT Supervision Report, and E-Distance Learning Course.

She also provided material for Liana Lowenstein’s book: Creative Family Therapy Techniques published in 2010. In addition, she and Liana Lowenstein Co-authored the Article: Creative Family Therapy Techniques that was published in the March 2013 issue of AAMFT Family Therapy Magazine.

In 2014 she was awarded the National Award for Promotion and Education of Play Therapy by the National Association for Play Therapy.

Trudy is Past-President of APT, which she has served on the APT Board for the past six years. She is President as well as Co-Founder of GAPT.

She currently serves on the Advisory Board for Argosy University, Georgia State University in Atlanta, and the Georgia State Play Therapy Training Institute Advisory Board.

About The Workshop

From a gate keeping and ethical standpoint, it is important to consider the impact of medication on children and adolescents as they may impact play behaviors during a routine play session.

As advocates for children and adolescents, Play Therapists must wear many hats. In an attempt to educate ourselves and become well-rounded therapists, we may find many works specifically indicating how medication s benefit during the therapeutic process (Green, 2006; Preston, O’Neal, & Talaga, 2010); however, few offer sound information about how medications can negatively impact the therapeutic process.

Practitioners may find the information, but because of its technical nature have a difficult time putting the material to use. To improve this process we need a basic understanding of neurobiology, neurotransmitters, and brain functioning (Martin, Scahill, & Kratochvil, 2010) to be able to conceptualize the medicated child or adolescent.

The intent of this presentation is to demystify and simplify the vast subject of psychopharmacology and begin to educate Play Therapists in a way to utilize the benefits produced by medication as well as be able to compensate for side effects with appropriate Play Therapy techniques.

Learning Objectives

This workshop will provide Play Therapists with an understanding of neurobiology and psychopharmacology in children and adolescents.

It will also provide ways to utilize Play Therapy to meet the unique needs of medicated children and adolescents in Play Therapy.

The goals of this workshop include:

1. Discuss basic neurobiology, neurotransmitters and brain functioning
2. Identify different medications and their mechanisms of action
3. Discuss the interaction of neurobiology, medication and Play Therapy
4. Identify how beneficial effects of medication may facilitate Play Therapy
5. Utilize Play Therapy techniques to compensate for the side effects of medications
6. Develop an individualized Play Therapy plan for each medicated child

About The Presenter

Franc is an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education, Director of the Institute for Play Therapy and CACREP coordinator at Henderson State University, in Arkadelphia, AR.

He is the Editor of the International Journal of Play Therapy and an editorial board member for the Journal of Creativity in Mental Health. Franc serves as co-chair of the Association for Play Therapy’s Public Awareness Taskforce, vice-chair of APT’s Foundation Board of Directors, and as a member of APT’s Directors Nominations, Conference Program, and Key Awards committees.

He is also the current president of the Arkansas Association for Play Therapy.

Franc received his Ph.D. from The University of Mississippi in 2009. He has been a Pharmacist since 1989, a Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselor since 2004, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor and a nationally Approved Clinical Supervisor since 2007.

His research interests include Play Therapy applications to Disruptive Behavior and Attachment Disorders.

Additional Notes

Parking

Attendees can park in the Church parking lot. Watch for the AAPT signs which will guide you to parking and entrance into the church building.

Lunch

Participants will have one and a half hours for lunch, but we’d like for you to return in time for our business meeting. Information about places to eat will be provided at the workshop.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Working with Service Members: Prevention and Intervention Strategies

Returning to “how things were” before the deployment of Service Members is rarely a smooth transition.

Service Members return to a family that shifted in household management, childcare, and individual responsibilities. Service Members also return with heavy baggage not easily discarded.

In a less stressful and demanding environment, memories, fears, and confusion more freely surface and interfere with daily life. Mental health care professionals have an opportunity and role in providing “informed and trained” mental health services to Service Members and their families.

This workshop is first in a series of trainings to prepare mental health providers for this service.

WORKSHOP AGENDA

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Develop an understanding of the military culture and its overt and covert expectations and responsibilities of Service Members;
• Develop an understanding of the impact of deployment and the return from deployment on the Service Members and their families;
• Learn how to identify and meet the unique behavior health needs of Service Members, including PTSD/TBI;
• Learn how to build and maximize the resiliency of Service Members and their families;
• Learn suicidal prevention skills and how to work with Service Members with suicidal ideation; and
• Learn how to utilize resources available to Service Members and their families.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Dr. Rebecca Jacobson obtained Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees in Psychology from Auburn University at Montgomery and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Educational Psychology from Auburn University.

She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Registered Play Therapist.

For many years Dr. Jacobson carried a private practice, Creative Interventions Counseling, focused on clients experiencing traumatic loss, grief, and other types of trauma.

In 2011, Dr. Jacobson began working with the Alabama National Guard Yellow Ribbon Program.

As the Resilience, Risk Reduction, and Suicide Prevention Program Manager she provides workshops on the stages of deployment, reintegration, resilience and suicide prevention. She continues to serve “those who serve” and considers it an honor to offer her skills to the men and women of the Alabama National Guard.

Donna Marsh has worked in the Counseling field for over sixteen years.

She is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor.

She began her career at a local community mental health agency with concentration in grief therapy, depression, and anxiety, working with adults, adolescents and children. Her professional career also includes working with hospitalized children and their families at Children’s Harbor/Children’s Hospital of Alabama.

Donna was instrumental in the establishment of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team who counsels with Chaplains and Police in the aftermath of traumatic incidents. Donna began work with the Alabama National Guard in 2012 as the Director of Psychological Health. Her work includes assisting Service Members in their transition back into their families, community, and lives, following their time of deployment.
