About The Workshop

This event will enhance your skills with children, adolescents, and adults and increase your practical knowledge of how to apply expressive arts therapies and play therapy. In particular, it will introduce you to trauma-informed expressive arts therapy [art-based methods along with specific play-based and expressive therapies techniques] and how to apply practical strategies to your work with children, families and adults who have experienced a wide variety of traumatic events and other challenges. Trauma-informed work is based on best evidence-based practices that are enhanced by specific applications, creative interventions, and brain-wise approaches.

  6. Define how neurodevelopment is related to the “expressive therapies continuum” in an art and play therapy practice

About The Presenter

Cathy A. Malchiodi, PhD, ATR-BC, LPCC, LPAT, REAT, is an art therapist, expressive arts therapist and clinical mental health counselor as well as a recognized authority on art therapy with children, adults, and families. She has given more than 400 presentations on art therapy and has published numerous articles, chapters, and books, including Understanding Children’s Drawings, Handbook of Art Therapy, Second Edition, and Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children, Second Edition. Dr. Malchiodi is a visiting professor at universities in the United States and internationally and is the founder and executive director of Trauma-Informed Practices and Expressive Arts Therapy Institute. She has worked with a variety of community, national and international agencies, particularly on the use of art therapy for trauma intervention, disaster relief, mental health, medical illness, and prevention. Dr. Malchiodi has served on the boards of many professional organizations including the American Counseling Association, Art Therapy Without Borders, American Art Therapy Association, and Association for Humanistic Counseling; she currently serves on the journal editorial boards of Arts in Psychotherapy, Creative Arts in Education and Therapy (China), and Academic Journal of Creative Art Therapies (Israel). A passionate advocate for the role of the arts in health, Dr. Malchiodi is a blogger for Psychology Today with a readership of 3.5 million.

Parking

Workshop participants can park in the visitor spaces near the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University or in the West Parking Deck (#19). Watch for the AAPT signs to guide you to parking and entrance into the workshop.

Cancellation Policy & Refunds

Registrants canceling up to 48 hours before a workshop will receive a tuition refund less a $20 administrative fee, or if requested, a voucher good for one year for a future workshop.

All requests must be made in writing or by email. No refunds issued for any reason after date of workshop.

In the unlikely event the workshop cannot be held, registrants will receive complimentary admission to a rescheduled workshop or a full value voucher, good for one year, for a future workshop.

Continuing Education

Six (6) Contact Hours will be provided for a full day of attendance. No certificate of attendance will be given before the workshop is completed. No partial credit will be awarded.

NBCC Logo for ACEPAlabama Association for Play Therapy (AAPT) has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6211. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Alabama Association for Play Therapy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

AAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy (APT) to offer continuing education specific to Play Therapy. APT Approved Provider No. 98-045.

Marriage and Family Therapists

The Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy (ABEMFT) automatically approves courses that are NBCC approved for CE credit.

Social Workers
