Workshop Overview

Millions of U.S. Children are exposed to domestic violence every year. Many of these children experience serious mental health problems such as disruptive behavior, anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Play therapists can be the significant difference in helping children exposed to domestic violence become resilient. Through up-to-date research and inspiring case studies, participants in this workshop will learn how to (1) explain the neurophysiological and psychological impact of domestic violence to adults and children; (2) design play-based procedures for establishing safety; (3) analyze play behavior of children exposed to DV, (4) demonstrate Trauma-Informed Child Centered Play Therapy procedures for facilitating a restorative trauma narrative, (5) develop play-based methods for children to connect with parents and safe people, and (6) implement self-care strategies.     

Objectives of the Workshop

  1. Investigate the neurophysiological and psychological impact of domestic violence on children and formulate methods to explain this to adults and children.
  2. Design play-based procedures for establishing safety for children exposed to domestic violence
  3. Analyze play behavior of children exposed to domestic violence.
  4. Demonstrate Trauma-Informed Child Centered Play Therapy procedures for facilitating a restorative trauma narrative, including facilitating understanding and enlarging the meaning
  5. Develop play-based methods for children to connect with parents and safe people
  6. Implement self-care strategies for play therapists working with children exposed to domestic violence

Brief Bio

Dr. Jennifer Baggerly is Professor of Counseling at the University of North Texas-Dallas and a play therapist at Kaleidoscope Behavioral Health in the Dallas area. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. Dr. Baggerly is Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association for Play Therapy (APT), the former chair of the APT research committee, and a recipient of the Outstanding Play Therapist Award from the Florida Association for Play Therapy. She has provided play therapy to children who have experienced trauma such as domestic violence for over twenty years. She has over 60 publications, including five books, numerous peer refereed journal articles, many books chapters, and several videos. Dr. Baggerly is recognized as a play therapy expert worldwide, having presented in Argentina, Canada, England, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan.

Continuing Education Credit

Six Contact Hours will be awarded for a full day of attendance.

No partial credit will be awarded.

Counselors:  Alabama Association for Play Therapy has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6211.  Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are identified.  Alabama Association for Play Therapy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Marriage and Family Therapists: The Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy (ABEMFT) automatically approves courses that are NBCC approved for CE credit.

Play Therapists: AAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy (APT) to offer continuing education specific to play therapy. APT Approved Provider No. 98-045.   

Social Workers: AAPT is approved by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners (ASBSWE) to offer continuing education to social workers. ASBSWE Provider No. 0284.

Cancellations

Registrants canceling up to 48 hours before a workshop will receive a tuition refund less a $20 administrative fee, or if requested, a voucher good for one year for a future workshop. All requests must be made in writing or by email. No refunds issued for any reason after January 29th, 2020. In the unlikely event, the workshop cannot be held, registrants will receive complimentary admission to a rescheduled workshop or a full value voucher, good for one year, for a future workshop
