Overview:
A brief history of the development of the Association for Play Therapy Standards of Practice will be presented. The unique interdisciplinary nature of APT in applying codes of ethics and the development of standards of practice will be emphasized. The basic principles used to develop the major codes of ethics are presented and discussed in relation to national and international mental health organizations. A recommended ethical decision-making model will be provided for making care decisions across mental health-related disciplines. As a final note, self-care and moral injury in situations where the play therapist must deal with conflicts between law, policy, professional or personal ethics will be discussed. The program will have opportunities for self-exploration and sharing in the area of ethics and personal values.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe a brief history of how the Association for Play Therapy Standards of Practice were developed.
- Explore the meaning of the concepts of responsibility, beneficence, non-maleficence, fidelity, justice, and respect as they apply to play therapy nationally and internationally.
- Share an ethical decision-making model to help guide the individual practice of play therapy.
- Explore the concept of moral injury in relation to conflicts that arise between law, policy, and personal ethics.
- Share the growing influence of APT’s Standards of Practice in the international arena.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Dr. Carmichael attended The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where she received her B. S. degree in Elementary Education and Psychology, M. Ed. In School Guidance and Counseling, and Ph.D. in Counselor Education. She was one of the first elementary counselors in Texas and a pioneer in the writing of a guidance plan for Killeen Independence School District, Title I Program. Her initial caseload was 10 schools and 1400 Title I students, K-8. She was one of the two graduate student assistants for the Pupil Appraisal Center at UNT, which was an interdisciplinary evaluation and play therapy center. She has been associated with Laredo State University in Laredo, Texas and Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Tx. She is retired from The University of Alabama, where she holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. She is one of the co-founders of the Alabama Association of Play Therapy, where she served as President and later Executive Director. She has served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Association for Play Therapy National Board. She has written in the field of play therapy and published the textbook, Play Therapy: An Introduction and she continues to write and contribute to the play therapy field.

CANCELLATIONS:
Registrants canceling up to 48 hours before a workshop will receive a tuition refund less a $20 administrative fee, or if requested, a voucher good for one year for a future workshop. All requests must be made in writing or by email. No refunds issued for any reason after April 19th, 2018. In the unlikely event, the workshop cannot be held, registrants will receive complimentary admission to a rescheduled workshop or a full value voucher, good for one year, for a future workshop.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
Six Contact Hours will be awarded for a full day of attendance.
No partial credit will be awarded.
Counselors: Alabama Association for Play Therapy (AAPT) has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6211. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Alabama Association for Play Therapy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
Marriage and Family Therapists: The Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy (ABEMFT) automatically approves courses that are NBCC approved for CE credit.
Play Therapists: AAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy (APT) to offer continuing education specific to play therapy. APT Approved Provider No. 98-045.
Social Workers: AAPT is approved by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners (ASBSWE) to offer continuing education to social workers. ASBSWE Provider No. 0284.
