There are many books that have been written on the theoretical foundation and process of utilizing sand trays in the healing process. However, many of these books are deep in their metaphorical understanding of the objects chosen as well as overall design of the tray.

The novice therapist may seem reluctant to utilize this technique due to the complexity of the information. However, the sand tray can be helpful to many children when used as a tool to help them explore and express feelings, develop insight into personal and family issues, and get safety needs met in a safe and non-threatening manner.

This presentation will cover several techniques for using the sand tray as a tool to help children process events in their lives and develop effective coping mechanisms. We will review important figurines to have in your collection as well as basic instructions to provide the child. Alternative techniques will be presented that a clinician of any skill level can implement IMMEDIATELY. The workshop will conclude with sample process questions to help clients explore their creation.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify basic toy supplies for sand work.

2. Explore the limitations of interpretation.

3. Learn how to process a Sandtray with adolescents vs. children.

4. Learn 5 alternative uses of the Sandtray.

5. Learn modifications for Family Therapy.

Cancellations

Registrants canceling up to 48 hours before a workshop will receive a tuition refund less a $20 administrative fee or if requested a voucher good for one year for a future workshop. All requests must be made in writing or by email. No refunds issued for any reason after JUNE 13, 2012. You may choose to substitute someone after this deadline but you must notify AAPT of the change. In the unlikely event the workshop cannot be held registrants will receive complimentary admission to a rescheduled workshop or a full value voucher good for one year, for a future workshop.

Scholarships

We are pleased to announce that Scott Riviere is going to be our presenter for our Summer workshop. It has been several years since we’ve had this popular speaker present at an AAPT workshop. If you are not familiar with Scott check out his website at http://www.kidzinc.com. He is a very technique based presenter and we know how much our members appreciate that.

Synopsis:

This workshop presents the basics in filial therapy, a manualized intervention.  Based on client-centered theory, the history and applications of this intervention will be discussed along with uses and goals of Filial therapy. Case examples will be provided.  The format and the sequencing of Filial Play Therapy will be discussed.  Research and history will be reviewed. The original model and the variations on that model are described.  Participants will be provided with the resources needed to develop a personal filial play therapy manual.

1. Explore Filial Play Therapy and why is it useful.
2. Examine the history of filial play therapy and the Theoretical Model.
3. Explore the goals and applications of filial therapy.

Integrating Art and Play Therapy

Synopsis

This workshop will be VERY EXPERIENTIAL with hands on learning about the similarities between art and play therapies and how they interact. We will explore art and play therapy the through making of play therapy objects that can be used in therapy. The concept of art therapy interventions vs. art activities in therapy will be explored. Experiential art therapy interventions that can be used in groups and individually will be demonstrated.

We would like to ask that participants bring with them one shoe box and a pencil. Other supplies needed will be provided.

Learning Objectives

Gain an understanding of the differences and similarities between art and play therapies.
Gain a clear understanding of art therapy interventions that can be utilized in play therapy.
Develop an understanding of when to refer to adjunct art therapy, as opposed to using art activities in play therapy.

The Alabama Association for Play Therapy is counting down to a frequently requested workshop integrating art and play therapy. It will be held June 17th in Birmingham.
