Play Therapy Training at U of A

Share

The Office of Play Therapy: Research and Learning at The University of Alabama will provide two opportunities for play therapy training.  These two courses meet the academic requirements for registered play therapist registration.  Both of these classes are open to persons in the last 12 hours of their undergraduate preparation in a related discipline through post doctoral work.  A interested person would have to apply to the graduate school as a non-degree seeking student, which means that the usual graduate school requirements are waived.

The first course is BCE 653: Introduction to Play Therapy.  This course is offered online entirely.  It begins on May 9 through 27.  We will meet each week for a live supervision on Tuesday and Thursday nights.  The class is presented in a series of modules with chapter tests.  Each student is required to have 10 practice play therapy sessions for supervision purposes.  At least two of these sessions needs to be submitted for review via digital recording.

BCE 654:Advanced Play Therapy is a series of weekend classes on the following dates:  July 8-9; 15-16; 22-23; and 29-30.  These classes meet on Friday night beginning at 6 PM to 9 PM and again on Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM.  These are activity based  with a hands on workshop format.  A series of videos of master play therapist will demonstrate the leading concepts and the class will be doing experiential work following the methodology.  The weekends will focus on Sand Play, Art Interpretation, Music, Movement and Musings, and then Diversity and Adaption of Play Therapy.  It is important to know that you will not be sitting in a traditional lecture atmosphere, but one of continuing play therapy experiences.  Students who enroll are allowed to miss one weekend and still receive a full grade for the class.  Students are expected to have 10 practice play therapy sessions external to the class which will be supervised in class through digital play back.  Digital recorders are available for loan.
