Synopsis
For most of us, interacting with other people comes naturally. However, individuals with ADHD, High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, Nonverbal Learning Disorder and other Social-Skill Problems can lack this innate ability to think through and succeed in everyday social situations. They often miss subtle visual cues and invade the personal space of others. They can speak out of turn, struggle to share and lose interest during long conversations. For some these little social snags quickly add up and they have difficulty “fitting in.” These problems continue into adult life if not addressed. Social skills are arguably the most important set of abilities a person can have. Human beings are social animals and a lack of good social skills can lead to a lonely life, contributing to anxiety and depression. Great social skills help you meet interesting people, get that job you want, progress further in your career and relationships. This workshop will provide an overview of techniques that can be utilized to improve the social skills of children and adolescents. We will discuss social skills techniques and how to incorporate those into various treatment settings. Practical techniques to promote social skills at school, in the home, and in a treatment setting will be highlighted. Being familiar with and upholding ethical standards are key components to providing quality mental health care to children, families and individuals whether it is through play and/or traditional therapy.
